Hi i have a real problem last home owners installed flooring in kitchen they layed a layer of felt paper roofing first now i can t get up the felt pa. Engineered wood floors may be nailed or glued to the plywood subfloor. Most vinyl underlayments are 1mm to 1 5mm thick. A vinyl flooring underlayment will not be as thick as a laminate or hardwood underlayment.

If you re set on having insulation under your floor if you are set on having the warmth and insulation under your flooring we would suggest switching to laminate flooring. Putting a soft product under vinyl plank will result in an unstable floor that is much more inclined to being damaged and even punctured or torn over time. The thicker 30 pound paper is too thick for most typical flooring. You can buy laminate underlayment but if you have a bunch of old roofing felt it works just as well.

Laminate flooring has to have underlayment in order to float the flooring. I know its vapor barrier with it. The floor trim around the edges holds it all down. While underlayment for vinyl planks may be used under hardwood and laminate the reverse is not true.

Laminate floors which may be tongue and groove or snap together are floating floors and not attached to the subfloor. If too much cushion is beneath the vinyl planks the locking system and joint integrity will be compromised. Cover the plywood with 15 pound roofing felt and then install the engineered or laminate floor. While manufacturers have made hardwood floors easy to install you do need to take a few steps to prepare the room to make installation easier.

Vinyl planks require hard thin underlay because the product itself is softer. I am trying to get house done on the cheap with laminate flooring and when i go price it the cheap underlayment stuff is nearly runs another 6 sq yard. Since vinyl planks are generally thinner than a laminate the underlayment is also thinner. Floating floors can be installed over any existing hard floor surface but should have an underlayment between the laminate flooring and the subfloor.

I dont see why i cannot use roofing felt to save some money. Your first task is preparing the surface that the hardwood will lie on which means deciding whether you need to use felt paper under the hardwood. So is roofing felt. Felt paper comes in 15 pound and 30 pound options.
